OCTOBER PAID FOLKS
My substack essays are free for all! Thanks for subscribing. The paid folks get a personal update monthly email that’s not an essay, more like a long voicemail message, so here’s a taste of what you may be missing in your life!
Hi friends,
It’s actually November. Thanks for being paid subscribers—your monthly personal catchup was a little late, and you’re so kind to be gracious about it. A close aunt died last week after a brief cancer battle, so many beloved relatives came in from out of town, and we did the Irish thing: mourn, laugh, and toast a lot.
heart
The heart is weary. Witnessing death that comes sooner than expected and certainly sooner than we wish is an uphill journey. I know this was the plan for her life (how do I know? Because it’s what happened.), but goodness, it still strikes grief in my heart to accept the finality of death. She’s my mom’s closest sister, lived with us when I was young, and was a staple at every family dinner and holiday for decades as she lived only a few miles away. His ways and His time are not always (or often) ours.
Other than that, October saw a season-ending leg injury for our oldest in cross-country, some resurgences of long-covid pain and headaches for our second, an increase in his desire to learn to ride horses for our third, some answers to persistent tummy aches for our fourth, and a bit more independence for our fifth! At 2.5, he’s still very much a mama’s boy, but a family friend has helped me watch him a few hours a week and he’s taking (slowly) to her and her zest for art projects (I’m allergic).
My heart is widening and deepening, mostly because I just to be near God at all times, and He’s on the cross a lot. So I want to be there, too. We attended a dear friend’s sibling’s wedding and that outpouring of love was a real gift to witness.
head
My filming session with Ascension Presents was such a delight! I was carrying more nerves for it than I realized—all of which poured out after we filmed my four talks. You know how that goes? You’re just toodling along, dealing with missing uniform tops and crusted jars that the dishwasher didn’t handle and thinking you’re not stressed and then BAM it’s over and you feel the adrenaline let-down! Those videos will be ready . . .
